Planning the magazine production

21. Budget, Calendar & Risk Assessment

Budgeting Considering the privileged situation explained in my previous post "Photoshoots research & planning", my budget is not an issue at all. I do not have to rent special photo shooting locations; no need to hire models, as my coworkers are more than happy to support me with my project (not to mention my ubiquitous cats :)); no costs for props and costume, as we will wear our day-to-day uniform; no investment needed in special equipment. So I am very lucky to state that my assignment will have EUR 0 budget (if we do not consider the cost of the buildersally.com…

20. Phoshoots research & planning

As already explained, this blog mirrors my current experience of constructor apprentice. I also had the opportunity to start my apprentice internship at my own place, as my mother and I relocated from Bucharest to Alba Iulia just one year ago and we are still remodelling/ refurbishing our new home. Hence, there is no need for much planning of the photoshooting, as I will use for this assignment only DIY or construction projects I work for at my place. The most complex projects I am part of are the landscaping and gardening of the back and the front yard. These…

18. Magazine Brand Identity

The overall style of my magazine is summarised below.GENREMy magazine is a specialized DIY publication providing expert advice and tips and tricks for home & garden remodelling, repairs and maintenance solutions.MASTHEADThe process of creating the masthead is detailed in one of my previous posts which can be read here. The matshead is made of 2 elements: the word "FACTOTUM", synonym of handyman, with latin origin to make it more globally understandable PLUS a sort of subhead "Home & Garden" to define the perimeter of the magazine content.FONTS & COLORSIt's a technical magazine, hence the style should be simple, clean, easy to…

17. Text & Content

Fonts to be used After the extensive research done for the selected masthead where I tried tens of fonts style, I decided to remain consistent and only use the 2 simple styles selected: horizon (for masthead and possibly for headlines) and Lato for the body text. The color palette will be simple and consistent too: black fonts for body text, accent red for headlines and subheads. In order to emphasize some ideas, I will simply use bold, italic or underlined textIn terms of size, I simply used random texts written in different sizes and then I printed them in order to…

16. Feature Article Research & Planning

For the feature article I chose to write and editorial about one of most dear to me landscaping projects I worked for. There should be 1 page of written article where I describe step by step how to remodel your garden, while the 2nd page should be filled with example images before & after. In terms of format to be used, I will start with a visible headline, probably looking as a header. There should follow the main image with a panorama view of the landscaping project I am referring to in the below article. No need for a byline crediting the…

15. Table of Contents

Framework & possible topics Being a technical magazine, I feel that  a simple 1 page ToC is the most suitable.I would definitely group my articles into 2 sections: Features and Regulars.Ideas for Regulars:safe & safety tools, apparel & techniques;flash news for tools and/or materials;expert opinion (with a regular interview of a construction professional about specific remodelling projects;readers engagement (where should be posted readers questions and suggested solutions).Ideas for Features: (this section should include chapters on very clear DYI project categories)woodworkmetalworktiles & pavementsplumbinglandscapinggardeningcleaningOnce I decide upon articles under these categories, I will include relevant pictures for the most interesting ones.MUST: in…

14. Masthead

Chosing the name My magazine addresses to DIYers and will feature tips about design and materials for house and garden remodeling. Hence it's a more technical magazine for which a suitable title should be very straightforward, without subtleties.I started by researching the word HANDYMAN for meaningful inspiration.Noun: handymanOxford Languages definition:a person able or employed to do occasional domestic repairs and minor renovations.Merrian-Webster definition:a person who does odd jobs;one competent in a variety of small skills or inventive or ingenious in repair or maintenance work, called also handyperson.Synonyms/ slang:Odd-job man, Off-jobber, Handy Andy, Factotum, Jack of all trades, Man of all…
